Portuguese wines win Best in Show
An Alentejo red and a Madeira fortified white pick up the top Platinum medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards

HE FIRST time a Portuguese table wine has won the accolade, the Alentejo wine Blog by Tiago Cabaço has been named the Best Red Blend at the Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the biggest international wine competitions, in May.
Made from Alicante Bouschet and Syrah, the 2013 wine is the top-of-the-range red from producer Tiago Cabaço, with around 9,000 bottles produced at Quinta da Berlica in Estremoz. It scored 95 points in the blind tasting.
Also picking up a Platinum - Best in Show medal, this time for Best Fortified Wine, was Cossart Gordon, a 1987 Madeira wine made from the Bual grape, which earned 98 points from the judging panel.
Among the 17,000 or so wines competing, the 200 judges of the international competition also awarded eight Platinum medals (Best in Category) to Portuguese wines, along with several dozen Gold and Silver medals.
