HE TRAVEL experts at Lonely Planet have rounded up the top 10 destinations to add to your bucket list in 2017, and the Portuguese region of the Alentejo is one of them.

While the top spot was awarded to the Croatian capital of Zagreb, the Alentejo placed 6th in the list thanks to its “magnetic allure” of clifftop castles, rugged coastlines and culinary wonders.

Adding to its “UNESCO World Heritage Sites, prehistoric megaliths and many hidden wonders”, the travel publication also highlights the Rota Vicentina walking trail, a diversity of creative restaurants and imaginative guesthouses.

“New investments in tourism haven’t taken away from the Alentejo’s timeless beauty, its rolling vineyards, medieval village centres or rich traditional cuisine, which ranks among the best in Portugal,” says the Lonely Planet writer.

With Zagreb topping the list, the other must-visit destinations were Gotland (Sweden), Galicia (Spain), Northern Montenegro, Leeds (UK), the Alentejo (Portugal), Northern Germany, Moldova, Pafos (Cyprus) and Le Havre (France).
